New to anime? Or just new to some Japanese terms in general? Here's a quick run down on some commonly-used terms from the Japanese language that usually turn up in anime, Sailormoon, or some people's websites.
* arigato - thank you * baka - idiot of fool, used as an insult. * bishoujo - it literally means "beautiful girl", but it is also used to mean "pretty." * bishounen - it literally means "beautiful boy", but it often is used to describe a male with feminine features. * domo - thanks (only used in formal situations) * domo arigato - thank you very much * fuku - uniform (as in a school uniform) * ginzuishou - The Imperium Silver Crystal, this is the Crystal that gives Sailormoon her power. * gomen - sorry * gomennasai - I'm sorry * hai - yes or okay * henshin - Transform. This is often heard in the context of "Henshin Yo!" which is what the Sailor Senshi often yell when it is time for them to transform. Also their transformation sticks are known as Henshin Sticks. * Ja matta ne! - See you later * kawaii - cute * konbanwa - Good evening * konnichiwa - Good afternoon * manga - Japanese comic book * min'na/minna - everyone * moshi moshi - a greeting used when answering the telephone, which is the equivalent to "hello" * odango atama - "Dumpling head." This is Mamoru's nickname for Usagi in the Japanese version. He obviously referring to her hairstyle. In the North American version this is changed to "Meatball Head." * ohayo - Morning * ohayo gozaimas - Good morning * ofuda - Anti-evil scrolls that Sailormars/Rei uses to defeat evil spirits. * otaku - Japanese slang for an unhealthy fan obsession. The term is used among the anime fan community referring to an "anime fan" without the negative connotation. * sayoonara - Goodbye (for a long time) * seiyuu - voice actor or actress * sempai/senpai - senior classmate * senshi - soldier, this is commonly seen when referring to the Sailor Senshi (Sailor Soldiers). * sensei - teacher * Sumimasen - Excuse me
I will try to add to this list as I come up with more things that seem important, or if I think of more things! Most of the info here is stuff I've picked up myself, some I've gotten from the glossary in The Sailor Moon Role-Playing Game and Resource Book by Mark C. MacKinnon, and some my friend Miri helped me with.
